Southern Pacific Alco PA Diesels

Saint Louis South-Western

The Cotton Belt had 2 of the big Alcos. 300 and 301 were built by Alco in November 1949, #77511 and 77512, and were Class Z20. They later were transferred (sold) to the SP as 6067 and 6068 respectively, Class DP-6. They were later traded in to General Electric, who sold them to Precision Engineering Co. There they were scrapped.

SP 6005 was a PA1, but I don't have roster information at this time.

SP 6006 was a PA1, Class DP-5, built in 1948, and renumbered from 6006-A.

On my way to Korea, I was to ship out of California, I rode the Overland Route to Pittsburg, CA. When we stopped in Sacramento, I ran up to the head end and got this photo. The locomotive was less than a year old at the time. I wonder about the housing above the headlight--it sure messes up an otherwise beautiful face. 6026 was a PA2, Class DP-9, built in 1952, and reclassified as AP620A-3 in 1966.
