Don's Rail Photos

Texas & Pacific

In 1970, I was offered 40 acres of West Texas land in the Big Bend area for a real cheap price. I bit and bought. I've never done anything with it, but it gives me bragging rights to having a ranch. One our first trip west of Fort Worth, we followed the T&P mainline to Monahans, where we turned south to Fort Stockton, and then thru Alpine to the Big Bend. Enroute we stopped at a few places for photos, like Abilene and Roscoe. At Merkel we passes a T&P freight, stopped, jumped out, and caught this pair of F7s. The 879 was built by Electro-Motive in 1950 as 1529A. In 1962, it became the 879, and the next year after the photo, in November, 1971, became the 1879. It was later traded back to Electro-Motive.
