In 1937, CPR saw the apparent end of the Great Depression. They placed orders for new locomotives including 30 4-6-4s from Montreal Locomotive Works. These were delivered in the last quarter of 1937 and included 2820 thru 2849. 2838 thru 2842 were equipped with boosters for the long run between Toronto and Fort William, 811 miles.
