Spokane Coeur d'Alene & Palouse Ry.

The first line of the SC&P was built between Spokane, WA, and Coeur d'Alene, ID, in 1903 by the Coeur d'Alene and Spokane Ry. It was extended to Hayden Lake, ID, in 1906, and a branch to Liberty Lake, WA, was completed in 1907. A second line to Liberty Lake was completed in 1909. The southern lines were built by the Spokane & Inland Empire Ry which absorbed the Coeur d'Alene line in 1906. A 77 mile line to Colfax was opened in 1907, and a 50 mile line from Spring Valley to Moscow, ID, was opened in 1908. The Coeur d'Alene line was 600 volt, but the southern lines were 6600 volt AC. The equipment was dual voltage.

In 1919, the company went bankrupt and split into the Spokane and Eastern and the Inland Empire RR although both lines were controlled by the same group. In 1927, in order to avoid losing these feeder lines, the Great Northern purchased both lines and merged them as the SC&P. Passenger service to Liberty Lake ended in 1927 and to Hayden Lake in 1929. Passenger service to Colfax and Moscow ended in 1939 and between Spokane and Coeur d'Alene in 1940. Dieselization came in 1941, and the lines were merged into the Great Northern in 1943.

When tempted, invoke your angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: He trembles and flees at the sight of your guardian angel.
