Postwar St. Louis PCCs
CSL and later, CTA, ordered 600 PCCs after the war from both St. Louis Car and Pullman. They were numbered in the 4000s and 7000s in continuation of the separate companies which made up CSL. The 4000s were Chicago Railways, and the 7000s were Chicago City Ry. St. Louis provided 290 of the cars, 4052-4061, 4372-4411, 7035-7274 between 1945 and 1948. But the end was quick to come for these cars since all surface rail operations ended within 10 years of the final delivery. These cars were recycled by St. Louis Car as elevated cars. Reused were trucks and electrical equipment, seats, windows, lights, and many small parts. 4391 is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum.
