1000 thru 1009 were built by Alco-Brooks in 1904. They originally were equipped with Stephenson valve gear and inside piston valves. These were later rebuilt with outside piston valves and Walschaert valve gear.

1010 thru 1014 were built by Baldwin in 1904. They originally were equipped with Stephanson valve gear and slide valves. In 1930 they were rebuilt with piston valves and Walschaert valve gear.

1015 thru 1039 were built by Baldwin in 1910. They were built with Baker valve gear with 1016, 1018, 1023, 1031, and 1037 receiving Walschaert valve gear in the 1930s. The entire series received various rebuildings which increased boiler pressure and reduced cylinder size from 26 to 24 inches increasing the tractive effort. 1018, 1026, and 1031 were streamlined in 1939 for The Firefly. 1034 and 1036 also were given a semi-streamlined treatment.

1040 thru 1059 were built by Alco-Schenectady in 1912. 1054 was built in February 1912, #50567. All were coal burners but were converted to oil begining in 1924. They came with Cole trailing trucks. 1041, 1042, 1046, 1049, 1053, 1056, and 1058 later received Delta trailing trucks with Franklin C-2 boosters. 1044, 1045, and 1051 received Delta trailers without boosters. Between 1939 and 1943 larger sand domes were applied and the bells were moved to the front end. Retractable coupler pilots were added to 1042, 1044, 1045, 1046, 1052, and 1058 at the same time.

1060 thru 1069 were built by Baldwin in 1917.  1062, 1064, 1065, 1066, and 1069 were rebuilt as 4-6-4 in 1937.  1063 and 1068 were rebuilt as 4-6-4 in 1940.  1060, 1061, and 1067 were rebuilt as 4-6-4 in 1941.
